USD or CAD? Check the Currency Before Checkout

Rostan Machane ·

A dollar sign alone does not tell you whether a price is in US or Canadian dollars. Look for the currency code beside the amount and verify it again before authorising payment.

Read all three places

Check the product page, basket and final payment screen. Shopify supports market-specific currencies, and its documentation explains that prices can be converted through configured exchange rates. That general capability does not prove which configuration a particular store currently uses.

At Dear Tingle, report an inconsistent currency label before ordering rather than assuming the lower-looking number is the amount your card will ultimately show.

Compare like with like

If you are comparing two shops, note the currency next to each total. Do not subtract a CAD price from a USD price to calculate a discount. Use an appropriate current conversion for planning, while recognising that the payment provider or card issuer may use its own terms.

Keep the receipt

Save the final order amount and currency. If the statement later differs, compare the merchant charge with any conversion or fee information supplied by your payment provider. Avoid sending a full bank statement to product support; share only the relevant redacted details if needed.

Do not infer currency from location

A Canadian delivery address does not, on its own, guarantee a Canadian-dollar checkout. Likewise, an English-language page does not establish a US-dollar charge.

Our bundle comparison guide covers the rest of the arithmetic. This guide provides no exchange-rate quote or promise about future refunds or conversion charges.
